The Housing
Regulations
Allocation of University of Ghana houses is governed by regulations approved by the Academic Board and administered by the Housing Committee.
Who is eligible
[ Eligibility ]The University provides accommodation to all Senior Members and to Senior Staff of at least the rank of Principal Administrative Assistant, or equivalent. Non-entitled staff whose duties require them to live near their workplace may be allocated housing where available.
How vacant units are allocated
[ Allocation ]The PDMSD advertises all vacant units. The Housing Officer vets declared points and publishes a list for comment; the Housing Committee then allocates each unit to the applicant with the highest score.
Family size & unit type
[ Family size ]A person with fewer than three children is not normally eligible for a three-bedroom house with a study. Larger families are not normally allocated one-bedroom units.
Ties & reversion
[ Ballot ]Where two or more applicants tie, a ballot decides the winner. If the highest scorer cannot accept, it passes to the next-highest applicant who chose that same house.
Change of accommodation
[ Movement ]Movement between flats is permitted after two years; between houses, after four. Swaps require written approval from the Housing Committee.
Vacating university housing
[ Exit ]On resignation, retirement or vacation of post, occupants surrender housing within set periods. A grace period of up to three months may be granted on application.
The points system
Six criteria produce every applicant's score. The figures below summarise the entitled-staff scheme.

- Professor 50 · Assoc. Professor 40 · Senior Lecturer 30 · Lecturer 20 · Chief Technician / Assistant Lecturer 15 · Principal Technician 12
- Special office
- Dean / Director / Head of Hall 15 · Vice-Dean / HoD 12 · Exams Officer 10 · Tutor / Chaplain / Coordinator 8 (only one may be claimed)
- Length of service
- 3 points for every year of service; study leave with pay still counts. Transfers from other Ghanaian public universities are credited.
- Residence
- 1 point per year at peripheral university housing; 3 points for staff outside the university housing system. None while on study leave.
- Dependants
- 1 point per registered child under 21 (or a proven student), up to 5; plus 1 for children of opposite sexes where one is at least 10.
- Pooling
- Spouses who are both staff may pool status, special-office and service points toward a single unit.
