Every vacant unit is awarded to the applicant with the highest vetted points. Six transparent criteria — drawn from the University's Housing Regulations — determine each score. Ties are settled by ballot.

Length of service
Three points for every year served, including study leave with pay.
Special office
Deans, Heads of Department, Exams Officers and other officers earn additional points.
Dependants
One point per registered child, with a bonus for children of opposite sexes.
Residence
Points for staff not currently housed within the university system.
Pooling
Spouses who are both staff may combine points toward a single unit.
